Lunar New Year may involve firecrackers and parades, but it’s a foodie holiday, too, with special dinners and cooking classes around the Bay.
Chris Yeo, the Singaporean chef behind San Jose’s Sino and Straits restaurants, will be hosting two cooking demonstrations at the Chinese New Year celebrations Feb. 12 at San Jose’s Santana Row Park. And his Sino restaurant is doing a lavish feast — a benefit for the Community Youth Center — that includes a fresh steamed whole fish and Cantonese-style lobster.
Cory Chen, executive chef at Yan Can Asian Bistro in Pleasant Hill and Santa Clara, will be celebrating, too, of course. He has several special events planned, including a Chinese drumming exhibition at his Santa Clara restaurant Feb. 9.
But if you’re entertaining at home, Chen suggests making Chinese-inspired lettuce fish wraps. The contrasting colors look beautiful on a round platter, he says, and the interplay of fresh lettuce with crisply fried, flavorful fish — a symbol of prosperity and rising fortunes — and a sweet, but spicy sauce is pleasing on every level.
Happy Chinese New Years!
