SAN RAMON — San Ramon may soon have a housing authority — a governmental body that oversees affordable housing and programs.

The City Council will consider approving the creation of the housing authority at its meeting Tuesday night.

The proposal for the authority stems from Gov. Jerry’s Brown proposal to eliminate local redevelopment agencies. In San Ramon, affordable housing funds are allocated through the city’s redevelopment agency, and city officials are concerned that if the redevelopment agencies are eliminated, any unallocated housing funds San Ramon has been receiving would be distributed elsewhere.

The governor’s proposal would shift housing money to local housing authorities, which San Ramon currently does not have. All cities have a dormant housing authority, under state law, said Brooke Harris, San Ramon’s housing programs manager.

San Ramon’s redevelopment agency receives about $1.8 million annually in affordable housing funds. Of that, $600,000 is unallocated; that money could potentially be used by the San Ramon housing authority for local housing programs.
